MALAYSIAN CHEF AND FOOD WRITER, ROHANI JELANI RELOCATES BUSINESS AND CHANGES FOCUS
THE
BAYAN INDAH CULINARY RETREAT, one of Kuala Lumpur’s most popular
cooking schools and event venues, located in the quaint Kampung Sungai
Penchala, Selangor has ceased operations after 15 years. Its owner,
well-known Malaysian Chef and Food Writer, Rohani Jelani has relocated
her business to new premises and will no longer be offering cooking
classes. Moving forward, Rohani will focus principally on recipe and
menu development work for corporate clients. She also looks forward to
having more time for her family and special projects that support her
main passion to get more Malaysians cooking.
Rohani
shared her reasons for the closure, “I am not the kind of person who
delights in too much repetition. I have been teaching cooking classes
since 2001. Although I have always enjoyed passing on practical skills
and had fun meeting the many interesting students who have turned up at
our kitchen, I felt that it was simply time to move on. Walking away
from Bayan Indah, its huge kitchen, the beautiful edible garden that I
nurtured for 15 years and our small but dedicated team of helpers who
have become close friends, feels a bit like leaving a party while you
are still having a good time – while the conversation is still lively,
before you have eaten too much dessert... I am really looking
forward to spending more time with my family, especially with my three
children and my mother who is growing older. One of my major regrets is
not having made more time for my dear father who passed away
unexpectedly last year.”
Rohani
stresses that there is still so much that can be done to inspire people
to cook more and live better lives. She is open to speaking with
organisations that would like to work with her to further this cause.
